My head aches, and as I flutter my eyes to open them, the pain only intensifies. Am I sick?
âSit up, carefully,â Zohar soothes, and I do, cringing at how weak and exhausted my muscles feel. My entire body feels like itâs been through some extreme exertion, and even laying here is painful. âDonât open your eyes yet, give yourself time to settle.â After the way fluttering hurt, Iâm not going to try and open them any time soon.
âWhat happened?â I ask, my voice croaky. This is more than just a cold.
âThis is what happens when a witch pushes themselves too much,â he says, his voice barely louder than a whisper, which helps my head.
âA headache?â
âWhat do you remember?â
I think back, running through my day. We skipped my water classâsomething that I wonât let become a habitâhad breakfast, went to my lecture with the very mean Professor Colabouniver, before having lunch with Ryes, Eirik and Tien. Then we went over to meet Jasper⦠and oh.
âHe said intent matters. That my intent is to grow the sunflower. Well, I started experimenting, trying to figure out limits,â I say, trying to explain the reasoning. âI didnât mean to⦠Iâm sorry for worrying you.â
âAlone?â Zohar demands.
âJasper said I could practice.â And in his defence, he really didnât want to leave me alone in his greenhouse. I begged. I feel guilty that Iâve caused another problemâespecially for Jasper, who already doesnât want to teach me.
I wonder if heâll let me come back. It hurts to think I wonât see him again.
âThere are so many things wrong with that sentence, dragonfly, but weâll talk about that when your head doesnât hurt so bad,â he says, reaching out to brush my hair out of my face. The cool touch soothes me. âEach type of witch has a different way that they recharge their source, their primordium, so we canât boost you that way. Instead, itâs going to be the old-fashioned way. Warm blankets, plenty of fluids and sleep.â
âLike I have a cold?â I ask, confused. I feel like I have the flu, minus the runny nose, so that actually makes a little bit of sense.
âExactly. When you use up all your magicae, you start to drain from yourself. Thatâs what you did. You pushed yourself too far, and now, now youâve hurt your body. I can feel how weak you are, and itâs not too severe, but enough that weâre going to need to take some time to fix it.â
âI donât feel that bad.â I feel bad, but I donât feel as if I used my life source to power my magicae. I mean, I trust what heâs saying, but I think heâs a little more worried than he needs to be.
âThatâs because Iâm taking the brunt of it, dragonfly,â he says, pressing a kiss to my head. âSo, try and get some sleep, okay? Youâre safe.â
I give the tiniest of nods, not wanting to move my head, before a thought occurs to me. âIs Jasper?â
âWhat?â
âHas someone hurt him because I was stupid?â I whisper.
