My head aches, and as I flutter my eyes to open them, the pain only intensifies. Am I sick?

“Sit up, carefully,” Zohar soothes, and I do, cringing at how weak and exhausted my muscles feel. My entire body feels like it’s been through some extreme exertion, and even laying here is painful. “Don’t open your eyes yet, give yourself time to settle.” After the way fluttering hurt, I’m not going to try and open them any time soon.

“What happened?” I ask, my voice croaky. This is more than just a cold.

“This is what happens when a witch pushes themselves too much,” he says, his voice barely louder than a whisper, which helps my head.

“A headache?”

“What do you remember?”

I think back, running through my day. We skipped my water class—something that I won’t let become a habit—had breakfast, went to my lecture with the very mean Professor Colabouniver, before having lunch with Ryes, Eirik and Tien. Then we went over to meet Jasper… and oh.

“He said intent matters. That my intent is to grow the sunflower. Well, I started experimenting, trying to figure out limits,” I say, trying to explain the reasoning. “I didn’t mean to… I’m sorry for worrying you.”

“Alone?” Zohar demands.

“Jasper said I could practice.” And in his defence, he really didn’t want to leave me alone in his greenhouse. I begged. I feel guilty that I’ve caused another problem—especially for Jasper, who already doesn’t want to teach me.

I wonder if he’ll let me come back. It hurts to think I won’t see him again.

“There are so many things wrong with that sentence, dragonfly, but we’ll talk about that when your head doesn’t hurt so bad,” he says, reaching out to brush my hair out of my face. The cool touch soothes me. “Each type of witch has a different way that they recharge their source, their primordium, so we can’t boost you that way. Instead, it’s going to be the old-fashioned way. Warm blankets, plenty of fluids and sleep.”

“Like I have a cold?” I ask, confused. I feel like I have the flu, minus the runny nose, so that actually makes a little bit of sense.

“Exactly. When you use up all your magicae, you start to drain from yourself. That’s what you did. You pushed yourself too far, and now, now you’ve hurt your body. I can feel how weak you are, and it’s not too severe, but enough that we’re going to need to take some time to fix it.”

“I don’t feel that bad.” I feel bad, but I don’t feel as if I used my life source to power my magicae. I mean, I trust what he’s saying, but I think he’s a little more worried than he needs to be.

“That’s because I’m taking the brunt of it, dragonfly,” he says, pressing a kiss to my head. “So, try and get some sleep, okay? You’re safe.”

I give the tiniest of nods, not wanting to move my head, before a thought occurs to me. “Is Jasper?”

“What?”

“Has someone hurt him because I was stupid?” I whisper.
